A Gorgeous Home in the Forest
The Umri, considered by many travellers as the best homestay in Lansdowne, is a two-storeyed building located in the forested hills of Uttarakhand. It is the only building in the vicinity and sits atop a hill on a winding road off National Highway 534, between Kotdwar and Lansdowne.
The homestay is situated on a small elevation overlooking an orchard from where you can hear the sounds of wild boar rooting for mushrooms at night. Or see glimpses of deer, foraging for food in the wild grass. Umari Khal, after which The Umri is named, is a small remote village nearby.
Created by two Delhi-based writers, the homestay is packed with beautiful artworks and books for both children and adults. All the rooms are decorated comfortably and stylishly, with ottomans to prop your feet on and read or listen to music, and deep sofas and king-sized beds that invite you to sink into them and doze off watching the mountains. The the bedrooms come with en suite bathrooms, equipped with best-in-class amenities and facilities. Little wonder that many travel writers believe this hillhouse in Lansdowne tops the luxury homestays in Uttarakhand.
